About Us
Here at the Great Valley Writing Project's Writing and Technology Workshop, children are taught the fundamentals of writing during a two week program; anything from poetry to picture books. Teachers are on the job to assist and encourage the students throughout their writing experience. Without being given a subject to write about, creativity is essential and gives more room for the students to grow and learn as a writer. During the time spent in the writing room, lessons are given about diction (or word choice), focusing on the five senses, and introducing new genres of writing. Within the computer lab, the students are not only further improving their writing skills, but also gaining computer skills while working with programs and software like Microsoft Word, Storybird, and iMovie. Mentors are assigned to the students’ individual needs, making suggestions of improvement and helping them select the piece to be published online and in the class anthology. The teachers as well as the peer group is involved in assisting, spotting mistakes, and generally improving each work. By the end of the writing course, students leave with sharpened writing skills, plenty of new friends, a new sense of confidence, and a better understanding of writing; how it can help them in the future, and how much fun it can be.
